Note that direct entry into the undergraduate Diploma in Computing is restricted to joint DEETYA/industry-funded students. Other applicants wishing to take out this qualification should apply in the first instance for entry into the Bachelor of Computing. Successful applicants will then be offered the opportunity of transferring to the diploma after the completion of twelve or more subjects.
The course is designed to produce programmers and analyst/programmers to work at the sub-professional level in commercial and industrial application areas. The course covers computer programming, computer architecture, information systems, and database management systems. Also included are supporting studies in accounting, human communication and mathematics; whilst in the final year of the course there is a compulsory project subject.
The Australian Computer Society has granted level three accreditation of the course, thus allowing diplomates to become eligible for associate membership.
See the entry requirements for the Bachelor of Computing as they also apply for the Diploma in Computing.
The Diploma in Computing is available only by distance education, and is usually completed over four years of part-time study. To qualify for the award of the Diploma in Computing, a student must complete subjects to the value of ninety-six points, comprising twelve compulsory and four elective subjects, as follows, where each subject is worth six points.
Students take elective subjects to the value of at least twenty-four points, normally chosen from the following:
Students wishing to take elective subjects other than those listed above may do so with the prior approval of the head of school.

In order to be eligible to graduate with a Bachelor of Computing, students must ensure that they meet all the requirements as specified in the regulations for that course. This will normally involve students taking a further eight subjects, including the core subject GCO3811 (Software engineering) and eighteen points of third-year computing electives. The exact study program is dependent upon which subjects have already been studied in the diploma. Students will be granted credits and exemptions for no more than sixteen subjects (ninety-six points).
Appropriate credits may be granted for approved studies completed at a recognised post-secondary institution, including other universities, TAFE institutes, and the Open Learning Agency of Australia.
For content descriptions for year-one subjects, see the entry for the Bachelor of Computing as the year-one subjects are common.
