Aims

The Department of Accounting and Finance offers the opportunity for people unable to attend formal tertiary institutions the unique study option to gain this highly sought after degree course by distance education.
This course is principally designed for students seeking a career in the banking and finance industry or who are already employed in the banking and finance industry and are seeking a relevant tertiary qualification on a part-time basis. In addition to a core of business foundation subjects, the course provides specialist study in a number of key functional areas of relevance to financial institutions and markets.
The objectives of this course are:

On completion of this course a student should be able to:

Professional recognition

This degree satisfies the educational requirements for senior associate membership of the Australian Institute of Banking and Finance. Holders of the degree who have not completed the two years employment in the banking and finance industry required for senior associate membership are eligible for associate membership in the interim.

Entry requirements

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)

Satisfactory completion of VCE with English, Units 3 and 4, at a minimum of C level and Units 3 and 4 of any mathematics at a minimum of D level. A 10 per cent bonus for Units 3 and 4 in any one of accounting, chemistry, economics, geography, legal studies, literature, physics, additional mathematics studies, or in a language other than English (LOTE) with a grade average of D.

Comparable qualifications

Applicants may also satisfy entry requirements with qualifications equivalent to the VCE: eg TAFE qualifications (the first year of a TAFE Associate Diploma or equivalent TAFE qualification) or comparable Year 12 qualifications, including International Baccalaureate or other approved tertiary study.

Special entry -- mature age

Applications are also invited from mature age applicants who, although they may not hold the required Year 12 qualification, may meet entry requirements by undertaking prior studies on a single subject basis.

Special requirements

Selection

Selection will be based on many factors besides the normal application form. Applicants are required to submit an up-to-date resume and two (past/current) written work references with their completed application form. Where possible, a letter from their current employer expressing support for their application and attesting to their general maturity, motivation and commitment.
This is a demanding course and students will require a disciplined plan of study and a high level of personal commitment and determination. Students will need to devote eight to ten hours per week for each subject to complete the reading, exercise questions and assignments.
This program is generally only open to applicants except in exceptional circumstances who have reached the age of twenty-three and over by 1 January 1999.

PC requirement

To complete the subjects successfully at a high standard, it is becoming increasingly essential to have access to a computer (486 processor-based system, 8MbRAM and 10Mb free hard disk space, Windows 3.1 or later) as a portion of the learning is by way of interactive disks. We are progressively moving towards delivering subject study material by electronic software and expect to have the majority of subjects on disks by the end of 1998.
Students in second year undertaking ETF1640 (Business mathematics and statistics) will need to have access to an IBM-compatible microcomputer and a spreadsheet package eg Excel, and will require a Cannon F402 calculator.
The priority closing date for this degree is 16 October 1998.

Attendance

Optional attendance at the Caulfield campus for three all-day Saturday tutorials in each semester. Audio/video tapes of the subject sessions will be mailed to all enrolled students together with any handouts.
