Books and readings

In this subject students will examine the process of reading in terms of both the reader and the text; the attention accorded that process by theorists from Leavis to the poststructuralists; the range of genre available, taking in the literary canon and popular culture; the reception of this material by the reading public and the influence of professional gatekeepers; the cultural background within which recreational reading is assessed; the forces which are put in motion to ensure that the public continues to read and what it reads; developments in publishing and the contemporary challenges facing the industry.
