The Graduate Certificate in Retail Business is designed to cater for experienced retail managers, with a first degree in a discipline other than marketing/retail, who wish to undertake study in retail business subjects at the graduate level. The aim of the course is to provide challenging, relevant study in retail business subjects leading to the Graduate Diploma in Retail and Wholesale Management.

Course objectives

The objectives of the course focus on four key areas of study through which the students will be able to:

relate marketing management processes to retail business applications;
formulate alternative courses of managerial action through critical analysis of organisational situations;
discuss the development of the retail industry and the strategic issues facing leaders in running a successful retail enterprise;
demonstrate an understanding of the strategic management issues resulting from developments in technology applicable to the retail industry.

Admission requirements

Applicants require a pass degree in a discipline other than marketing/retail or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution and at least three years relevant employment experience. The course is offered by distance education and will therefore be available to retail managers based in retail or related service organisations anywhere in Australia or abroad. Applicants from abroad will need to meet the university's requirements regarding proficiency in English. Applicants without a first degree who have at least six years appropriate employment experience should refer to the section on executive certificates.

Fees

This is a fee-paying course. Candidates should consult the Department of Marketing as to the 1999 course fee. Course fees are set and reviewed annually and are therefore subject to change.

Duration

The Graduate Certificate in Retail Business is normally completed in two semesters of part-time study.

Mode of offering

The course is offered by distance education from the Caulfield campus.

Credit for work done previously

Candidates may be eligible for a maximum of two credit exemptions where they have completed subjects considered to be equivalent to particular subjects in the Graduate Certificate in Retail Business. Where candidates have completed subjects similar in content, but not equivalent to, particular subjects in the course, the course director may request another suitable subject to be substituted.

Professional recognition

The course is recognised by the Australian Retailers' Association. Course graduates employed in the retail industry are eligible to apply for graduate membership.

The course consists of the following four core subjects:

MKF9810 Management of retail enterprises
MGG9370 Management theory and practice

Progression to further studies

Students who successfully complete the Graduate Certificate in Retail Business may apply for admission to the Graduate Diploma in Retail and Wholesale Management.
