Objectives Upon successful completion of the subject students should have a practical knowledge of a variety of issues in the musical traditions of Sub-Saharan Africa, including the history, musical styles, the socio-cultural function of different performance genres, and musical instruments.

Synopsis As for MUS3910 but with two additional assignments totalling 4000 words concentrating on a specific topic relating to the music of sub-Saharan Africa.

Assessment Written (4000 words): 40% - Examinations (1.5 hours): 45% - Assignment: 15%
