Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject students should have a practical knowledge of a variety of issues in the musical traditions of Sub-Saharan Africa, including history, musical styles, the socio/cultural function of different performance genres, and musical instruments.
Synopsis This subject deals with musical, aesthetic, social and ritual concepts and practices as expressed in the musical life of sub-Saharan African cultures, with particular reference to selected performances of music and dance, the relationships between music and the related arts, and the topology of musical instruments in sub-Sahara Africa.
Assessment Written (2500 words): 40% - Assignment (500 words): 15% - Examination (3 hours) 45%
