Analytical and compositional techniques II

Objectives The objective of the subject is to broaden students' knowledge of music theory, analysis and composition. By the end of the course students should be able to understand principles of tonal and atonal counterpoint, conduct Schenkerian analyses of tonal works, and compose twelve-tone music.

Synopsis The subject covers traditional counterpoint, Schenkerian analysis and the twelve-tone system developed by Arnold Schoenberg. Students learn to compose contrapuntal and atonal music, and examine the multi-layered harmonic structure of tonal music.

Assessment Twelve-tone composition: 20% - Counterpoint exercise: 20% - Exercises in Schenkerian analysis: 20% - Aural training test: 10% - Examination (2 hours): 30%
