Human rights in Australia: The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander experience

8 points - 3 hours per week (two one-hour lectures and one one-hour tutorial) - First semester - Gippsland and distance - Prerequisites: GSC1801, GSC2802

Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to understand the key concepts of human rights in an international context. Students will be able to recognise the key concepts of human rights in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander experience and have an indepth understanding of the history of human rights and Australia's role in the development and implementation of human rights.

Synopsis This subject will assist students to acquire analytical and research skills which will enable them to examine and discuss objectively the application of Human Rights in Australia, in both a general sense and specifically in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This subject also aims to assist students to examine their knowledge and understanding of Human Rights, and which Human Rights Australian citzens can expect to have applied on their behalf by Australian Government.

Assessment Journal on human rights issues (2000) words: 30% Proposal for research topic (1000-1500 words): 20% Research project (3000 words): 50%
