Objectives On successful completion of this subject students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the differences between writing for print and writing for broadcast; a grasp of the skills required to become skilled broadcast interviewers; a range of practices involved in radio and television production through practical instruction and critical analysis; an understanding of the philosophy and ethics of radio and television news and current affairs programs; familiarity with the responsibilities of journalists in the representation of age, gender and cultural diversity in news and current affairs stories/programs.
Synopsis This subject will explore the role of radio and television news and current affairs in society. Issues of the production of meaning by news construction and editing will be considered. The subject will address the issues of news production and journalism field work in radio and television.
Assessment Conversion of stories written in print style to style suitable for broadcast; the conduct of interviews suitable for broadcast; the maintenance of a journal of listening to and watching and critical analysis of radio and television news and current affairs programs watched and listened to during the semester; the production of the scripts of a radio and television news story; the production of the script for a radio and a television current affairs story.
