Women's writing

8 points - 3 hours per week (one 1-hour lecture, one 2-hour tutorial) - First semester - Gippsland and distance - Prerequisites: Second-year writing and gender studies major two of GSC1401, GSC1402, GSC1901 or equivalents. (For those students who commenced an English major prior to 1997, GSC1401 and GSC1402)

Objectives On successful completion of this subject students will have an understanding of the way feminist knowledges have altered reading procedures and contemporary writing practices.

Synopsis The study of selected examples of imaginative works and criticism by women writers begins with a consideration of the editorial and marketing factors which influence the production of anthologies of women's poetry and fiction. Questions of audience and address will be considered, as will 're-vision' as a feminist compositional technique. The genres studied include autiobiography, the political essay, prose fiction, poetry and journalism.

Assessment Minor assignment (2000 words): 30% Minor writing assignment (1500 words): 25% Major assignment (2500 words): 45% - Students doing this subject at third-year level will be required to develop suitable topics for their assessment, demonstrating a wider range of reading and a greater analytical grasp of the subject concepts.
