Basic statistics and computing for social sciences

Objectives On successful completion of this subject students should have acquired an informed familiarity with published statistics; developed skills in manipulating data both manually and with an appropriate computing package; extended their understanding of data presentation; equiped themselves with hypothesis testing techniques; and extended their ability to critically evaluate data analysis in published research.

Synopsis Use of published data - especially Australian Bureau of Statistics, eg labour force, demographic profiles etc. Introduction to statistical analysis (chi-square, t-test and correlation, ie covering both parametric and non-parametric statistics). In conjunction with this subject students will use computers for statistical analysis.

Assessment Progressive assessment: 70% - Examination (2 hours): 30%
