Advanced Chinese, part 3

Objectives On successful completion of this subject students should have acquired the knowledge (linguistic, historical, sociological and cultural) that would enhance their understanding of modern and traditional China through the study of literary works of contemporary Chinese writers as well as excerpts from major works in the classical literary canon; to consolidate students' ability to comprehend and express complex ideas in both spoken and written forms; and to come up with strategies of cross-cultural conceptualisation crucial to critical thinking on a range of politcal and cultural issues of the present and the past.

Synopsis Reading of original modern and classical texts; advanced spoken Chinese; study and interpretation of documentary video materials.

Assessment Two essay assignments (1500 words each): 20% - Written examinations (4 hours): 50% - Seminar paper and oral presentation: 20% - Class participation: 10%
