Objectives On completion of this subject successfully, students should have developed a good understanding of contemporary Chinese society and its cultural background; the ability to comprehend and express complex ideas in both spoken and written forms; strategies of cross-cultural conceptualisation, incorporating translation skills, crucial to critical thinking on a range of contemporary issues concerning China.
Synopsis Reading of original texts, introduction to classical Chinese, and advanced spoken Chinese.
Assessment Two essay assignments: 20% - Written examinations (4 hours): 50% - Seminar paper (including oral presentation): 20% - Class participation: 10%
