Visual arts studio 6

12 points - 8 studio hours and 16 independent study hours per week - Second semester - Caulfield, Gippsland and Peninsula campuses - Prerequisites: VIS3105

Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to critically evaluate their own work and that of others within an historical and contemporary context and be able to express this in both written and oral form; have produced a body of work which indicates the development and synthesis of a personal visual language expressing a conceptual continuity; have produced work which has reached a high degree of resolution regarding technical elements and presentation; be able to work independently; have developed a curiosity and method of inquiry which enables them to question and discuss the issues relevant to current art theory, practice and contemporary culture.

Synopsis Each student will write a comprehensive work proposal for the entire semester. This proposal should outline the theme each student will research and the means by which the synthesis of this research will be expressed. This includes an explanation of the intent of the work, the subject matter and the content. The proposal should also attempt to place the work within a broader context and as such should make reference to both historical and contemporary practice, including specific artists who are of particular relevance, both in conceptual and technical terms. As well as producing a folio of work, students will be expected to keep a journal which documents in visual and written form their investigations, research and progress and actively participate in tutorial discussions and critiques. Studio practice may be undertaken in complementary areas such as painting, photography and sculpture.
