Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should have a working general knowledge of historical and contemporary concepts related to their own work and that of their peers and be able to articulate these concepts; have established a conceptual framework for their own work; have attempted to consolidate and resolve technical and procedural processes relevant to their work; have a high level of independence with regard to researching ideas and source material; have a broad interest and appreciation of contemporary art practice and culture.
Synopsis Students will be required to establish a strong conceptual framework for their work through independent research into the historical and contemporary concepts related to that work. In practice and theory students should explore general aspects and themes which are appropriate, for example, metaphor, myth, narrative, imagination/fantasy, the spiritual, sign and symbol. Students will be expected to report within the group the findings of their independent research and discuss the wider implications of their reading. They should also be aiming to consolidate and resolve technical and procedural processes relevant to their work. As well as producing a folio of work, students will be expected to keep a journal which documents in visual and written form their investigations, research and progress, and actively participate in tutorial discussions and critiques. Studio practice may be undertaken in complementary areas such as painting, photography and sculpture.
