6 points - 4 studio hours and 8 independent study hours per week - Second semester - Caulfield, Peninsula and Gippsland - Prerequisites: VIS1101 - Corequisites: None
Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to develop their knowledge of the formal elements of art making previously acquired in VIS1101; be able coherently to communicate in oral and written form the initial source and inspiration for their work; be prepared to research other artists' work that may have relevance to their own concerns both technically and conceptually; be able to explore the technical possibilities of a number of materials appropriate to their chosen means of expression; know how to establish a consistent working procedure and momentum; extend the range of visual source material relevant to their work; have a clear understanding of health and safety procedures within the studio.
Synopsis Through set projects, students are introduced to a number of issues and themes traditionally found within art practice. Students investigate these themes and develop their own response within the broad parameters set. The development of procedures, processes and appropriate technical skills to establish a working momentum is of primary consideration. As well as producing a folio of work, students keep a journal which documents in visual and written form their research and progress. Students are expected to actively participate in tutorial discussions and critiques. Studio practice may be undertaken in complementary areas such as painting, photography and sculpture.
