Visual arts studio 1

Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should understand elements such as line, form, texture, volume, shape and the relationships which exist between these elements in composition and construction; recognise that there are specific links between form and content in art making; be aware of a number of different formal and technical procedures and processes that may be applied to their work; be acquainted with various techniques and media sources from which to select for their art practice; appreciate that art practice has connections, affiliations and relationships within historical and contemporary cultures; have an understanding of the health and safety procedures required in studio practice.

Synopsis This subject is primarily an introductory program to visual arts practice and is designed to establish foundation knowledge of art-making by developing a strong visual awareness. Through specific projects, students are introduced to a range of processes, methods and materials used in 2D and 3D art practice. Students are encouraged to develop their own ideas, curiosities and interests. Different strategies and methods for the generation of ideas, investigation, synthesis and production, are employed with each project. Health and safety requirements are addressed in tutorials and workshops. Students complete a folio of art work in relation to the set projects. In addition, students are required to keep a journal which documents their progress and investigation, both in written and visual form.
