Business management for design

Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to understand the principles of scientific management and organisation; understand the range of issues in the management of a design office, as well as a small business; understand the range of systems and computer systems for managing the business; identify key issues in the selection of computer hardware and software to operate the business; develop a basic (conceptual) plan for the management of a design office.

Synopsis This subject introduces students to management and organisational theory as applied to small business. Topics include invoicing, payments, salaries and salary payments, cash flow, determination of fee rates, profit, cost allocation, taxation, information systems, networks, databases. Lectures specifically cover legal requirements, registration, insurance liability and indemnity insurance, industrial relations and legal responsibilities and finance for small business. Criteria for selection of computer hardware and software for small business management are also discussed.
