Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should: (1) have a sound knowledge of the technical aspects of black and white Photography and be competent in the practice of these skills; (2) have some critical understanding of the conceptual aspects of photographic image making; (3) have an ability to organise the resources available for problem solving inherent in self-initiated photographic projects; (4) have an awareness of the methods of analysis with which to examine the content of their own and other photographic images.
Synopsis Students will develop and extend their knowledge of black and white photographic techniques. A further examination of photographic images within various cultural contexts will be undertaken, and as a result students will be encouraged to develop their own individual photographic projects. Practice and research methodologies will also be discussed and explored. Students will produce a folio of work and a journal which documents their investigations, research and progress. Active participation in tutorial discussions and critiques will also be expected. Students will be instructed on health and safety procedures.
