6 points - Four hours lectures and studio per week - First semester - Caulfield and Gippsland - Prerequisites: None - Elective

Objectives By the completion of this subject students should have: (1) an understanding of a range of black and white photographic processes and the capability to experiment with these processes; (2) an understanding of light and how it affects photographic practice; (3) some ability to employ skills of observation, analysis and selection. (4) an awareness of theoretical and practical aspects of photography in relation to communications and social history; (5) an understanding of, and the capability to apply, health and safety procedures required in relevant studio practice.

Synopsis Students will be introduced to a range of approaches and techniques in black and white photography through a number of set projects supported by lectures, tutorials, and practical demonstrations. Emphasis will be placed on the acquisition of technical skills and on developing some understanding of the relationship between form and content. Various genres of photography, including fine art, documentary photography, and photojournalism, will be introduced, discussed and compared. Students will produce a folio of work and a journal which documents their investigations, research and progress. Active participation in tutorial discussions and critiques will also be expected. Students will be instructed on health and safety procedures.

Assessment Progress will be monitored by the submission of studio work throughout the semester (folio) and assessment will be based on artistic and conceptual development, and evidence of technical achievement - Folio: 80% - Studio journal: 20%
