Major project (Industrial design)

18 points - 36 hours per week including at minimum 4 formal class hours - Second semester - Caulfield - Prerequisites: IDE4001 - Corequisites: TAD4502 and PPR4103

Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to undertake an industrial design project from brief to client and construction/implementation presentation, at a high level of capability; demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the discipline and its professional practices, with particular reference to the social, cultural and aesthetic aspects; have a high level of knowledge of the contemporary discourse in design and industrial design and be able to position their own work relative to it; be able to debate and/or defend their practice in a critical interrogation; cultivate high ambitions to perfect their practice of design and industrial design.

Synopsis An industrial design project is undertaken, selected by the student in consultation with a supervisor and the course coordinator. The project must have appropriate aspects to serve as a vehicle to demonstrate the students' professional understanding and capabilities as well as appropriate complexity to enable the student to professionally undertake and present it within the time and resource limitations of the subject. All documentation must be completed to a high standard. TAD4502 and PPR4103 will provide regular individual and group critiques of the design as it develops and the thinking underlying it. The student will demonstrate understanding of the discipline of design and the capability to research fundamental needs and issues underlying the brief.
