Materials and manufacturing 2

3 points - 6 hours per week, including one 1-hour lecturer and one 1-hour tutorial and 4 independent study hours - First semester - Caulfield - Prerequisite: IDE2401

Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should be aware of high volume production technologies of the metals and plastics industry; have knowledge of design for production with respect to metals and plastics; understand the application of metals and plastics in product design.

Synopsis This subject furthers students knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes, and the related design for production issues with particular reference to their application in product design. The focus is on high levels of production and includes the following. Metals: workshop processes, welding and fabricating, metals casting, machining, die casting, forming, rolling, powder metallurgy, extrusion methods, and finishes. Plastics: an introduction to polymer processing, with lectures on compression and injection moulding; blow moulding, rotational moulding, vacuum forming, glass reinforced composites; assembly and fabrication techniques, including sonic welding and the use of adhesives.
