Materials and manufacturing 1

3 points - 6 hours per week, including one 1-hour lecture and one 1-hour tutorial and 4 independent study hours - First semester - Caulfield - Prerequisites: IDE1809

Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should have basic knowledge of manufacturing method; understand the properties of materials, used in manufacturing purposes; interpret product designs for low volume, batch production; have a basic knowledge of applied mechanics relating to product design materials and structures; appreciate product life, recycling and environmental issues.

Synopsis This subject introduces students to the use of materials and manufacturing processes with particular reference to their application in product design. Initially, tuition is directed at achieving an understanding of low volume production applicable to the timber products area, finishes and laminates, paper and paper board products, fabricated metal, formed plastics and glassware products. Product lifecycle and environmental design considerations are taken into account to include disassembly techniques and the recycling of metals and plastics. Students gain an understanding of design applicable for low volume manufacture or batch production, including an introduction to applied mechanics which relate to such product areas.
