3 points - 6 hours per week, including one 1-hour lecture and one 1-hour tutorial and 4 independent study hours - Second semester - Caulfield - Prerequisites: IDE1808
Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to identify sources of load and classify them as point loads, distributed loads and so on; determine the resultant of a series of loads and determine reactions; identify 'load paths' in a structure and classify members as tension, compression, bending, etc; determine the stability or otherwise of solid objects; appreciate the fundamental action of tension, compression and bending members.
Synopsis This subject covers the basic material necessary for an elementary understanding of the concepts of mechanics as applied to consumer products, including loads and forces; Newton's Law, actions, reactions and equilibrium; components of a structure and free body diagrams; loading effects, tension, compression and bending; properties of sections, area, centre of area and centroid; stability of solid objects, overturning and sliding. The course is delivered through lectures and tutorials that include problem-solving sessions and assignments relevant to specific products and case studies.
Assessment Progressive weekly assignments: 50% - Examination: 50%
