Portrait painting and drawing

6 points - 4 studio hours and 8 independent study hours per week - Caulfield - Prerequisites: Passes at credit or higher level in FNA1201, FNA1202, DWG1201, and DWG1202; or permission of subject coordinator - Corequisites: None - Elective

Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to achieve a likeness of a variety of human subjects through painting and drawing; be versed in making meaningful decisions about the suitable spatial context for a given portrait, the posing of subjects, suitable apparel and lighting; be able to approach portraiture with a variety of technique and means of notation; develop intuitions about individual body language, expression, gesture and other human characteristics which may inform a portrait; be able freely to consult a large body of reference in the history of western portraiture and consider critically the continuing meaning of the genre in the context of contemporary culture.

Synopsis This semester provides a practical introduction to the specialised knowledge and skill required for portraiture in the mediums of painting and drawing. Through a sequence of studio session which make use of the life model, skills in observation, representation and characterisation are promoted. Issues related to the suitable posing, setting and lighting of individual human subjects are explored through projects of varying technical means and intensity.
