Painting studio 2

Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should possess formal skills in painting, especially in the areas of composition, volumetric relationships and colour; have basic representational or drawing-based painting skills; be able accurately to perceive and represent specific motifs; have an ability to mesh subject matter with a suitable mode of its representation; have the means to extend the range of visual source material relevant to their work; understanding how figurative studio practice may be related to various critical, conceptual and theoretical issues in contemporary art; understand and practise health and safety procedures in the studio.

Synopsis This subject examines a range of procedures and techniques through set projects. While conceptual, aesthetic and theoretical concerns are addressed, this subject primarily concentrates on improving students' technical and perceptual skills. Particular topics might include mixing warm and cool greys, the control of colour variations and its application in tonal or drawing-based forms, as well as projects concentrating on composition. Teaching is by group and individual tuition. Health and safety procedures are taught and practiced in the painting studios.

Assessment By folio. Initial project or work-in-progress is assessed in the first part of the semester and contributes a weighting of no less than 20% to the final assessment.
