Computers for print 3

3 points - 2 studio hours and 4 independent study hours per week - First semester - Caulfield - Prerequisites: DIS2402 - Elective

Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should have an advanced level of sophistication in the establishment of control of and processes involved in preparing material for print using page layout software; be able to exercise precise typographic control and established standards for a variety of documents; be able to coordinate and present electronic files of various formats and levels of complexity for a variety of production/printing processes.

Synopsis This unit is an advanced specialisation subject for visual communication students. As well as advanced typographic and image preparation, formatting and control, the unit provides an opportunity to develop further skills and apply concepts to a variety of production processes ie digital printing, offset lithography, flexography, silk screen. Electronic preparation of single, spot, multi- and process colour artwork for these various processes requires specific technical considerations. New techniques and emerging trends are investigated such as the use of 'hexachrome' colour printing, stochastic screening, digital pre-press and press proofing systems. The course is delivered to small groups of approximately fifteen students and may involve presentations from visiting lecturers or plant tours, as is appropriate.
