Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should understand the basic set-up and components of a graphics workstation for the design and production of printed material; have a basic understanding of desktop publishing software and have basic page layout skills; understand the relationship of various software to the publishing/printing process; be able to manage the importation and formatting of text files and placement of image files.
Synopsis This is the initial unit in a series of subjects available as an area of specialisation for visual communication students, although it may be undertaken as an elective by any students who have successfully completed the prerequisites subjects. Students are instructed in the fundamental principles of page layout/desktop publishing applications for which the typical outcome is printed material. Design and advertising industry standard applications are used to realise designs and layouts. Through a series of set projects students are involved in creating documents, defining grids and mastering page elements, importing and formatting text, preparation and placement of images and/or graphics, as well as linking, updating and general file and project management. The course is delivered through small group tutorial sessions of fifteen students per group.
