Major project (Design honours)

18 points - 36 hours per week, including 4 formal studio hours and 32 hours of independent study - Second semester - Caulfield - Prerequisites: DGN4001 - Corequisites: TAD4502

Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to undertake a design project from brief to client and construction/implementation presentation, at a high level of capability; demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the discipline and its professional practice, with particular reference to the social, cultural and aesthetic aspects; have a high level of knowledge of the contemporary discourse in design and be able to position their own work relative to it; be able to debate and/or defend their practice in a critical interrogation; cultivate high ambition to perfect their practice of design.

Synopsis A design project is undertaken, selected by the student in consultation with a supervisor and the course coordinator. The project must have appropriate aspects to serve as a vehicle to demonstrate the students' professional understanding and capabilities as well as appropriate complexity to enable the student to professionally undertake and present it within the time and resource limitations of the subject. All documentation must be completed to a high standard. Research seminar will provide regular individual and group critiques of the design as it develops and the thinking underlying it. The student will demonstrate understanding of the discipline of design and the capability to research fundamental needs and issues underlying the brief.
