Applied modern algebra

Objectives The objectives of this subject are for students to develop an understanding of abstract algebraic methods and their application through a study of Boolean algebra and group theory; to advance students' knowledge and understanding of the applicability of group theory to diverse areas, such as crystallography, combinatorics, statistical designs, and communication theory.

Synopsis This subject aims to develop skill in abstract algebra and introduces its diverse application. Boolean algebra and the design and analysis of switching circuits; groups, quotient groups, morphisms and actions of groups; three-dimensional symmetry groups, crystallographic groups; P--lya-Burnside enumeration; introduction to algebraic coding theory; construction and use of latin squares. For distance students, four two-hour expository and discussion classes are available over the semester, to supplement full notes and the textbook.

Assessment Assignment: 30%
* Examination: 70%
