Objectives Students completing this subject should possess an understanding of data and computer networking concepts, be familiar with the TCP/IP suite of protocols starting with the physical layer up to the application layer, be able to use the concepts in the design and development of data networks, analyse and evaluate the performance of data and computer networks, possess an understanding of network management problems and understand and appreciate issues on the information super highway.
Synopsis Data link layer design issues, protocol specification and verification; the medium access sublayer, local and metropolitan area networks, multiple access protocols; the network layer, design issues, connection management; the application layer, security, network management; the Internet.
Assessment Examination (3 hours): 70%
