Objectives On the successful completion of this subject students will be able to understand the basic chemistry of organometallic compounds and their applications in the chemical industry as catalysts, the catalytic cycles; describe the key properties of superconducting materials and the fundamental structure of high temperature superconductors; recognise the imperfect crystal structures and non-stoichiometric oxides, their special properties and application; appreciate the structures, properties and synthesis of organic polymers; gain an understanding of the key properties and structures of fullerenes, and appreciate their significance for chemistry; gain an understanding of principles and structures of organic molecular electronic materials; experiment the synthesis of some organometallic compounds, identify them and test their properties; practise scientific report writing at a higher level.
Synopsis CHM3647 contains chemistry of newly developed inorganic and organic materials such as organometallic catalysts, ceramics, high temperature superconductors, and polymers. Chemistry of some latest organic materials such as fullerenes and molecular electronic materials are introduced as well. This subject is conducted by a combination of lectures and practical work.
Assessment Assessment for this subject consists of
end-semester examination, assignments, attendance of practical work and
reports. Assignments: 20%
* Theoretical examination: 60%
* Practical
work: 20%
* A pass in both theory and practical work is mandatory to pass
the subject.
