CHE3082

Chemical engineering science

12 points
* Six 1-hour lectures/tutorials and one 3-hour practical per week
* Second semester
* Clayton
* Prerequisites: CHE3071

Objectives The student is expected to acquire a knowledge and understanding of the basic concepts of mass transfer and to develop skills in the application of this knowledge to the design of some unit operations involving mass transfer; knowledge of the concepts of heat transfer including coefficients, mechanisms and analogies; a basis knowledge and understanding of momentum transfer analysis and modelling of fluid-flow phenomena in idealised or simple systems relevant to process engineering.

Synopsis Mass transfer-coefficients, equilibrium state; analytical and graphical solutions for selected unit operations. Heat transfer-coefficients, mechanisms, analogies; analysis for jacketed vessel, double-pipe and shell-and-tube heat exchangers. Flow through pipes; friction factor, Reynold's number, laminar and turbulent flow. Particle drag. Pumping of fluids.

Assessment Examinations: 85%
* Laboratory work: 15%
