Objectives Upon completion of this subject, students should comprehend and be able to apply modern technologies of biochemistry and molecular biology; have experienced the planning and carrying out of a research project on a selected topic in biochemistry and molecular biology; be able to prepare a detailed report on a research project, including presentation and interpretation of results; have developed problem-solving skills; have developed proficiency in critical evaluation of the scientific literature; have developed further communication skills by presentation of advanced seminars on a range of topics, including their own research work.

Synopsis This subject will expose students to a modern, technically based environment of research and training in biochemistry and molecular biology. It aims to provide students with a level of technical skills and knowledge of advanced biochemistry and molecular biology commensurate with proceeding to a research career at MSc or PhD level, or undertaking other professional laboratory-based activities, or non-laboratory based professions, such as education, business or administration.

Assessment Laboratory research: 42.5%
* Three assessment-of-data exercises: 30%
* Oral presentations: 17.5%
* Literature review: 10%
