Drug and alcohol nursing

Objectives On completion of the subject, students are expected to be able to define the various terms associated with substance use and substance related disorders; differentiate between substance abuse and substance dependence; discuss predisposing factors implicated in the aetiology of substance related disorders; describe the expected effects and withdrawal effects of a variety of commonly used substances; outline contemporary treatment approaches for people with substance-related disorders and describe the role of the nurse within such approaches.
