Clinical teaching

6 points * 4 hours per week * Second semester * Gippsland/distance

Objectives On successful completion of this subject, it is expected that students will be able to recognise the importance of continuing education in professional practice and in the teaching role of the registered nurse; understand the process of learning, especially as it relates to adult learners; understand the process of teaching and facilitating in relation to learning; apply several educative approaches to their own work situations in relation to clients and colleagues; understand the educative relationship between the health professional and the client, be that the individual, small groups or the community; understand the aim of health promotion as the fostering of wellbeing and self-care in the client; prepare a single-session educative program to facilitate and evaluate learning of an individual or group on a selected health topic/issue; design a small program to facilitate and evaluate learning, including the processes of collaboration, coordination and change, for a group with a selected health problem/issue; prepare a single-session educative program to facilitate and evaluate learning of nursing staff on a selected topic, being mindful of varying nursing practice expertise and utilise a theory to demonstrate application of the processes of teaching/learning, collaboration, coordination and change in the provision of holistic care to an individual or group with a health problem and a social problem.

Synopsis The teaching role of the registered nurse and the educative process as an integral part of nursing practice and nursing professional development. Students will be encouraged to gain an understanding of mentorship and preceptorship in relation to professional development of colleagues and the teaching-learning process within the context of their own work situations in relation to clients and colleagues.
