Objectives Through a variety of in-class, clinically based, and student-driven activities, this subject should enable students to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of a range of critical health breakdown situations facing the intensive care patient; develop knowledge and skills necessary to provide nursing interventions to critically ill patients in life threatening situations within a multidisciplinary intensive care environment; develop an increased knowledge base specific to technological skills; demonstrate problem identification and problem solving abilities in implementing nursing care strategies; develop communication and interpersonal skills in caring for patients, their families and members of the multi-disciplinary health team; demonstrate a knowledge of therapeutic agents in terms of relevant legislation and safe intensive care nursing practice.

Synopsis This clinically based subject develops the student's knowledge and skills necessary to provide specialised nursing care to intensive care patients facing life threatening situations. The student will learn concepts essential in caring for patients such as those with multi-system organ failure or patients post cardiac/neuro surgery. Clinical placements will include experience with mechanical ventilation, haemodynamic monitoring, complex drug therapy and acute renal dialysis.
