Objectives At the completion of this subject students should have acquired an informed awareness of the complex environment in which libraries exist, as a basis for coming to terms with it in professional practice.

Synopsis A study of current ethical, social and economic issues which affect library service; the role of associations of librarians; general library matters, eg planning of buildings, conservation of materials; library legislation; relationships among libraries in developing national resources.

Assessment Essays: 60%
* Seminar participation and presentation: 40%
