Objectives At the completion of this subject students should be able to evaluate professional literature in the librarianship field; apply the theories and practice of librarianship to the workplace; demonstrate practical skills at a professional level in a library or information service; work effectively under supervision with both staff and clients in the workplace; understand the role of the library in the environment in which it operates; understand current issues relating to librarianship, including the role of professional associations and professional networks; and know of career opportunities within the library and information services field.

Synopsis This subject introduces the student to the practical environment in which the theory of librarianship is applied and helps prepare students for entry into the professional workplace. It links the theoretical concepts of librarianship to professional practice in the workplace. Students will gain an awareness of the literature of librarianship and an understanding of professional issues relating to librarianship, including the role of professional associations. The subject introduces the student to the world of work and career opportunities in the library and information services market via the professional development/overview visits. Through the fieldwork placement, which is the major component of the subject, students gain a good understanding of the role of the library in the environment in which it operates.
