Electronic commerce systems - analysis and design

Objectives On completion of the subject students will have a sound understanding of the principles of systems design and analysis; practised the construction and application of logical and physical systems to the commercial practices of electronic commerce; acquired a comprehensive knowledge of documentation techniques in electronic commerce; developed and practiced the skills and competencies necessary to undertake a requirements analysis for a business application of electronic commerce; acquired an understanding of the tasks performed by systems analysts; an understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of alternative approaches in systems design and analysis.

Synopsis The subject provides a detailed examination of information systems theory and analysis and why systems analysis and design are essential to the creation of an information system. The subject also provides an examination of the systems approach to solving problems in business and the practice of electronic commerce. Other issues include an extended analysis of the systems lifecycle business processes in relation to electronic commerce; alternatives to the traditional systems development life cycle including software packages, prototyping, reusable code, CASE tools, reverse engineering, object-oriented technology, and end-user development; information gathering, data flow representations and data dictionaries; systems design principles and program selection and design; requirements analysis.

Assessment Assignment 1 (2000 words): 20%
* Assignment 2 (2500 words): 30%
* Examination (3 hours): 50%
* Successful completion of this subject will be contingent on the student demonstrating a satisfactory level of performance in each element of assessment.
