Objectives On completion of this subject students will be able to describe the organisation and operating principles of computer systems and become competent users of DOS and UNIX operating systems.

Synopsis Overview of computer organisation and operating principles; number systems, internal data representations, logic and Boolean algebra; CPU; primary memory and secondary memory; input and output devices; system software: OS concepts, DOS, UNIX, Windows, Windows NT, Windows 95, language translators; common application software; security and anti-virus issues; data communication and computer networks; the social aspects of computer applications. Access to the university's computer systems via modem is compulsory for distance education students.

Assessment Assignment: 40%
