Objectives On completion of the subject, students should have experience with applying problem-solving skills to develop a practical solution to a non-trivial project; be able to work independently or in small groups on a project, from the initial stages of defining the problem (in conjunction with a supervisor), through analysis, to producing a written technical report on the implemented solution; have experience with the issues involved in constructing a substantial piece of software to produce a solution to the specified problem.

Synopsis This subject is intended to provide practical experience involving a non-trivial project. The projects are generally software-oriented, although a small number of hardware projects may be offered. The list of projects to be offered by individual lecturers will be available at the beginning of semester, and students will be assigned to projects in the first week of semester. There are no lectures in this subject, although students will be expected to attend regular meetings with their project supervisor. As a rough guide, this subject should require about one hundred hours of effort from the student during the semester.
