Objectives To provide students with fundamental knowledge about communications protocols design; concepts of business data communications; theoretical understanding of data communications principles.

Synopsis Data communications networks and open systems standards, the electrical interface, data transmission technologies, data link control protocols, local area networks, wide area networks, internetworking basics, emerging broadband networks, transport control mechanisms, applications support protocols and applications specific protocols.

Assessment Examination (3 hours): 50%
* Practical assignments: 50%
