Objectives To enable students to understand technical and financial issues in the choice and use of software and hardware.

Synopsis Evaluation of hardware platforms and areas of application, benchmarking, identification of office needs. Types of peripheral equipment, CD ROMs, scanners, printers. Networks and interfacing to hardware platforms. Office integration, hardware, software, peripherals and LAN. Information security, unauthorised entry, backup and software security. Duty specifications for specific needs. Preparation of operating procedures. Training needs. Case studies, evaluation of specific requirements in a laboratory. Evaluation of company brochures and technical information.

Assessment Examination (2 hours): 50%
* Practical work: 50%
