Mechanics of machines

Objectives The student is expected to acquire a basic knowledge and understanding of mechanics of machines and mechanisms.
Synopsis Force concepts. Force systems. Basic interaction: friction, inclined plane, power screw clutches and brakes. Rotation, inertia and kinetics of rigid bodies, kinematics of geared systems. Machine elements: power transmission systems, toothed gears, V-belt pulleys, gear ratios, pulleys and shafts. Block and tackle systems for mechanical advantage. Mechanisms, examples of common devices and how they work, sliders, cranks, bearings.

Assessment Examination (3 hours): 70%
* Laboratory work, assignments and tests: 30%
