Objectives To obtain a knowledge of the materials that are used as refractories and the factors that affect their in-service performance at high temperatures.

Synopsis Introduction - uses of refractories, types of materials that are used as refractories, general properties and sources of materials used in the manufacture of refractories. Sintered refractories including magnesia, doloma, magnesia-chrome, chrome-magnesia, forsterite, aluminosilicates, silica, zircon, silicon carbide, carbon (graphite) and chrome. Fusion cast refractories. Castable refractories. Refractories for thermal insulation. Measurement of the properties of refractories. Uses of refractories, examples in the ferrous and non-ferrous industries.
