Objectives The student is expected to gain a knowledge of the methods used in the production of cement clinker, an appreciation of the critical factors that can affect the setting reactions of cement, a knowledge of the methods that are used to improve the physical properties of cement and concrete and an understanding of the materials problems involved.

Synopsis History of inorganic (calcareous) cements. Production of Portland cement and phases in Portland cement clinker. Hydration of Portland cement.
