Objectives The student is expected to gain a knowledge of the methods used in the production of cement clinker, an appreciation of the critical factors that can affect the setting reactions of cement, a knowledge of the methods that are used to improve the physical properties of cement and concrete and an understanding of the materials problems involved.

Synopsis History of inorganic (calcareous) cements. Production of Portland cement and phases in Portland cement clinker. Hydration of Portland cement. Mortars, concrete, aggregates, workability, water/cement ratio. Additives to cement and concrete, pozzolanic materials etc. High strength cement and concrete. Behaviour of concrete after pouring. Reinforced and pre-stressed concrete, fibre reinforced cement and concrete. Corrosion and durability of cement and concrete. Fire resistance of concrete. Special cements and concrete.
