Objectives The student should gain an understanding of the optical and optoelectronic properties of inorganic and polymeric materials. A basic understanding of the design and behaviour of optical fibres should also be obtained.

Synopsis Optical fibre technology. Light propagation in optic fibres. Rayleigh scattering. Material absorption mechanisms. Optical window. Non-linear optical materials, sensor applications. Liquid crystals.
