Materials selection and manufacturing

Objectives To develop an appreciation of the diverse materials and manufacturing methods used in the production of engineering components and to gain a broad overview of materials selection.

Synopsis Brief history and development of materials, the extraction of metals from ores (iron, steel, aluminium, copper), the production of polymeric and ceramic materials. A comparison of the methods used in the shaping of materials in these three classes. Industry structure and economics. The manufacturing industry in Australia. Practical sessions run as a self-directed learning program.
