Materials science and engineering

Objectives To develop an understanding of the origins and applications of a wide variety of materials in use in electrical engineering, including magnetic materials, insulators, conductors, semiconductors and superconductors. The student should emerge with a knowledge of the operation, design and manufacture of components and devices constructed from such materials.

Synopsis Introduction to materials: ceramics, metals and polymers. Microstructure - property relationships; electrical conduction and resistivity. Diffusion. Doping and purification of materials. Semiconductor transistors and integrated circuits and their manufacture. Bipolar and MOS VLSI fabrication. The origin of magnetism in solids; ferromagnetism, paramagnetism and diamagnetisation. Curie temperature and domains. Hard and soft magnetic materials. Dielectrics: ionic, electronic and orientational polarisations. Temperature and frequency dependence of dielectric constant. Ferroelectrics and piezoelectrics, optical fibres, their uses and manufacture.
